Midlife has a way of shifting your perspective. Your body changes, your priorities evolve, and what once felt important begins to take a back seat (in a good way!). Rather than resisting these changes, I have found myself leaning into them, curious about how to feel stronger, more energised, and better supported as I embrace my midlife years.
For me, midlife is not something to fear. Instead, I see it as a time to reset, recalibrate and invest in long-term health. With this in mind, I travelled to Longevity Senses Cascais , just outside Lisbon, to explore how a dedicated wellness escape might support this period. What I found was a thoughtful blend of treatments, nourishing food, and restorative calm, all set against the backdrop of Portugal’s rugged Atlantic coastline.
Initial impressions
Arriving just in time for lunch after an early flight from London, I was greeted by bright sunshine and a palette of ocean blues and soft greens. Spread across charming villas wrapped in greenery, the hotel blends understated elegance with a relaxed coastal feel. There are manicured gardens, a tranquil yoga dome, a big outdoor swimming pool, and glimpses of the sea at every turn.
Worth noting is that Longevity Senses Cascais is equally suited to both those seeking a structured wellness programme and those simply wanting a restorative break by the sea. For many, myself included, it offers the perfect balance of both . As an adults-only retreat surrounded by nature, the atmosphere is calm and restorative.
Longevity clinic and spa
One of the highlights of my stay was exploring the extensive spa and wellness facilities. Guests can enjoy a heated indoor pool, an outdoor saltwater pool, sauna, steam room, sensory showers, ice fountain, and a well-equipped gym.
Beyond the spa, there is also a comprehensive wellness clinic offering targeted treatments and programmes . For those ready to fully commit, multi-day experiences such as detox , weight loss or longevity -focused programmes provide a structured path towards improved health and vitality.
However, if you prefer a more relaxed approach, the treatment menu can be tailored to your individual needs.
Two standout treatments I experienced:
TESLAChair™ for Pelvic Floor Therapy: Pelvic floor health is something many women become increasingly aware of in midlife, yet it is rarely discussed openly. This innovative treatment uses Functional Magnetic Stimulation to strengthen your muscles. You simply sit and relax while the technology does the work. It is completely non-invasive and pain-free.
Seaweed Detoxifying and Draining Wrap: This was, without question, one of the most relaxing treatments I have ever experienced. After being covered in a mineral-rich seaweed blend, I was wrapped and placed on a dry flotation bed. Within minutes, I had drifted off to sleep! The treatment supports circulation, skin tone and detoxification, but for me, the sense of complete calm was the real highlight.
Fresh and nourishing cuisine
Nutrition plays a central role in midlife wellbeing, and the food at Longevity Senses Cascais reflects that. Meals are designed to support your energy, hormonal balance and overall vitality, with a focus on whole, nutrient-dense ingredients.
The Sea Senses restaurant is bright and inviting, with a menu that celebrates fresh, local produce. Breakfast is abundant and full of fresh vegetables, cheeses, fruits, yoghurts, breads and juices, alongside a hot menu of options like eggs and oatmeal.
Lunch and dinner are equally impressive, with dishes centred around freshly caught fish, organic meats and seasonal ingredients. Each plate feels considered, balanced, vibrant and full of flavour.
A standout moment during my stay was spending time in the kitchen with Head Chef João Cruz, learning how to prepare a perfectly grilled seabass. His passion for simple, high-quality ingredients was evident in every detail, and his seabass was excellent! A special mention should go to the waiter, also called João, for ensuring the service was excellent.
Restful accommodation
The hotel’s 38 rooms strike a balance between comfort and understated luxury. They are designed by renowned Portuguese architecture studio Sá Aranha & Vasconcelos with a soft and calming aesthetic.
My room, tucked within one of the villas, featured a south-facing balcony overlooking the gardens and out towards the sea. Inside, there were plush linens, generous pillows (in lots of different sizes) and a spacious bathroom with double sinks and indulgent products.
Sleep, which can often feel disrupted or shallow during midlife, felt effortless here. The peaceful surroundings, combined with blackout curtains and good soundproofing, created the perfect environment for drifting off.
Wrapping up
This stay came at exactly the right moment for me. Midlife can feel uncertain, but it also offers a chance to reconnect with your body, your needs, and your sense of self. Longevity Senses Cascais offered a supportive approach in a serene setting, with friendly staff.
Stepping away from routine, even briefly, allowed me to reconnect with what truly matters: rest, nourishment, movement, and presence. Being cared for by such a thoughtful and professional team made the experience all the more special.
Travel recommendations
Lean into quiet rituals with a touch of luxury: I brought along a Portuguese Sneferu candle to light in the evenings on my balcony. The Ficus Purpurea scent (lavender, wild fig, fig leaf, white musk) was very calming, creating a gentle wind-down ritual before bed. Burning candles can be quite meditative too, so each evening felt very tranquil.
Rediscover the joy of walking: As personal trainer Emilia Pihkala often reminds me, stiffness can creep in with age, affecting both mobility and posture. Walking is a simple, effective way to counteract this. From the hotel, the rugged beauty of Guincho Beach is about an hour away along a coastal path, while Cascais , a picturesque seaside town, is a 35-minute walk in the other direction. Sunset, in particular, is a beautiful time to go, as the sun sets over the ocean along the coastal path.
Make travel feel effortless: I organised my airport transfers with Welcome Pickups in Lisbon, and the experience was seamless from start to finish. Having everything arranged in advance with a trustworthy company brought a sense of ease, and the friendly drivers offered helpful local insights along the way, making the journey feel like part of the experience rather than just another transfer.
