Imagine stepping into a spa pool so indulgent, it comes with its own calming ocean soundtrack; that was my introduction to the new floating room at Vila Joya in Portugal’s sun-soaked Algarve. Thoughtfully designed to harmonise with its surroundings of sweeping sea views, lush gardens, and serene minimalism, this one-of-a-kind space features a mosaic-tiled, chest-deep pool, custom-built and heated to body temperature – perfect for discovering and experiencing Aquatic Bodywork Therapy.
Aquatic Bodywork Therapy explained
The origins of floating therapy can be traced back to the 1960s, when neuroscientist Dr. John C. Lilly began experimenting with sensory deprivation tanks designed to eliminate external stimuli. Initially rooted in scientific exploration rather than relaxation, the practice gradually found its way into the wellness world. By the late 1970s, floating therapy was gaining recognition for its wide-ranging benefits encompassing:
Reduced joint stress Improved circulation Muscle relaxation Pain relief Improved mobility Stress reduction Improved balance and co-ordination
Today, this evolution of floating therapy has given rise to a more intimate and transformative experience known as Aquatic Bodywork Therapy. As someone completely new to it, I was intrigued by the promise of near-weightlessness in warm water and deep tension release. What I did not anticipate was just how immersive and emotionally freeing Aquatic Bodywork Therapy would turn out to be.
Rather than simply floating, Aquatic Bodywork Therapy involves being gently cradled and guided through the water by a trained practitioner. My therapist, Pernilla, warm and instantly reassuring, talked me through each step of the therapy. Light flotation aids were attached to my body for buoyancy, before Pernilla used flowing movements, gentle massage, soft bodywork, and acupressure techniques on me to ease tension and help me unwind.
The session, held in the tranquil floating room at Vila Joya , was incredibly therapeutic. As I floated on my back, comforted by the water’s gentle rhythm, I began to tune into my breath and the beat of my heart. I felt so relaxed that I was close to drifting off at certain points. Aquatic Bodywork Therapy was less of a treatment and more like a big virtual water hug. By the end, I did not just feel lighter in my body and refreshed, I felt clearer in my mind and extremely peaceful.
A haven of rest and rejuvenation
Beyond the tranquil spa rooms and dreamy Aquatic Bodywork Therapy experience, Vila Joya is a small, but perfectly curated hotel; like a luxurious home away from home. With just 13 rooms (nine suites and four guest rooms ) set amid lush gardens, the property feels like an expansive private villa. Each uniquely designed room showcases breathtaking sea views that capture the Algarve’s golden light and stunning sunsets. Some rooms feature Moorish influences with original hand-painted tiles and antiques; others embrace Japanese minimalism with wooden baths.
Vila Joya’s onsite amenities complement its intimate atmosphere, including the serene spa, a rooftop sauna and Turkish bath, a whirlpool tub, a tennis court, bike rentals, two outdoor swimming pools (one exclusively for adults), and a well-equipped gym.
Fuel your wellness journey
No visit to Vila Joya is complete without indulging in its exceptional dining experiences. The hotel boasts two world-class restaurants: a two-Michelin-starred restaurant led by Austrian chef Dieter Koschina, and the laid-back yet equally impressive beachside spot, Vila Joya Sea , helmed by chefs Rafael Oyama and Hiram González.
Set in arguably the most breathtaking dining location in the Algarve, the Michelin-starred restaurant offers open-air lunch and dinner with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. The ever-evolving menu celebrates fresh, seasonal ingredients, and I was privileged to enjoy Chef Koschina’s 13-course ‘Favourites’ tasting menu – each dish a stunning display of flavour, artistry, and meticulous craftsmanship.
Just steps away on the beach, Vila Joya Sea serves modern Japanese and Pan-Asian dishes from Wednesday to Sunday, while on Mondays and Tuesdays, it transforms with vibrant Mexican cuisine crafted by The Flying Chefs. Across both venues, the food is consistently delicious, vibrant, and beautifully presented – an absolute must-try for any guest.
