No More Square Eyes
Children born with a lazy eye needn’t bother with an eye patch, instead they should play computer games! That’s the advice from researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University. Scientists designed special gaming goggles that feed different images to each eye. The lazy eye receives a clearer image than the normal eye, causing the nerves and muscles to work harder.
Did You Know? One in 30 babies born is now a twin! It’s thought this is due to the increase of couples using fertility treatments.
Ditching the mod-cons
I recently enjoyed interviewing Daniel Sieberg about his book The Digital Diet (£10, Random House). “Sounds like he’s old and anti-technology,” my teenager said, but in fact Daniel works for Google. He now realises after curing his own self-confessed addiction that our digital usage needs to be in moderation. Daniel says: “It’s like sugary food, or too much sun exposure,we all need a balance.” As parents most of us know that our kids live and breathe computers, phones and personal devices, but at the risk of sounding un-cool I believe we must steer them from addiction and help them to regain balance. At a friend’s home last weekend our collective four teenagers ranging from thirteen to seventeen were sprawled across a huge sofa playing. ‘Sounds remarkably quaint and healthy,’ I hear you say, but the game was entirely electronic! Each child using their own personal device connected via Wi-Fi – the game required no face to face contact or even speech! We can’t turn back the clock, it’s a different generation, but I’ve also been inspired by another new book too – Skimming Stones and Other Ways Of Being In The Wild, by Rob Cowen and Leo Critchley (£14.99, Hodder & Stoughton). They suggest building a den, foraging for food and lighting fires. I suggested these ideas to the kids and my eldest grunted, groaned and said: “Mum – have you gone mad?
Get moving
Jabadao, an organisation which promotes the importance of physical activity in children has urged parents to take baby out of the car seat whenever possible (when you’re not driving!). If they spend too much time curled up or restricted they may develop niggles and pains later on in life. So if you’re at a friend’s for the day, make sure you take a comfy blanket for your baby to sprawl out on. For more tip and advice on your child’s development visit jabadao.org
Fact file Although it may be tempting to ‘eat for two’ while you’re pregnant, keeping your weight in check can reduce the risk of your baby developing autism”
