What is moon water? How to make it + what to do with it

The energetic and emotional power of the moon has been celebrated in spiritual rituals for thousands of years, including the practice of Ayurvedic moon bathing. Creating moon water is a way of harnessing the moon’s power by charging water with lunar energy, which is thought to help banish negativity and add strength to your spiritual intentions and manifestations.

What is moon water?

It does what it says on the tin: moon water is simply water that has been placed outside, or on a windowsill, to be charged by moonlight. It can be referred to as ‘full moon water’ or ‘new moon water’, depending on what phase of the moon has charged it.

What are the benefits of moon water?

You might be wondering: what does it actually do? The most popular use is to cultivate power in our spiritual intentions for the new moon cycle ahead, or release negativity from the cycle behind us.

It’s essentially all about manifesting positive energy and spiritual wellbeing, using the ancient energy current of the moon.

It’s also believed that lunar energy has a calming effect over our physical and emotional wellbeing – easing symptoms of stress and inflammation.

In the ancient Indian healing system of Ayurveda, the cooling properties of the moon are believed to help soothe the pitta dosha, which is responsible for all heat in the body. Harnessing the energy of the moon is particularly recommended in the Ayurvedic treatment of menopause to combat symptoms like hot flashes.

How does it work?

The energetic link between the moon and water is best represented by the ocean; let’s not forget that the incredible gravitational pull of the moon controls the tides. Therefore, it’s said that water is especially receptive to the moon’s power, and can also imbue intentions that we give it ourselves.

The moon is its most powerful during a full moon, and so most people make their moon water during this phase.

When should I make it?

You can technically make it during any clear night (bar a lunar eclipse, due to its dark energy), but some believe that you can utilise different phases of the lunar cycle for different purposes.

You can also take it one step further and see what other lunar events are happening that month (for example, a full moon in Aries). This is also said to have an effect on your water’s power.

New moon water

In a new moon – also known as a dark moon, when there is no light reflecting from the moon’s surface – the emphasis is on looking forward and manifesting new goals. This is the phase to begin new challenges and work on your personal growth.

Full moon water

A full moon is the time to release behaviours that no longer serve you and cleanse yourself from negative energy. It’s the most powerful phase of the moon as it is at its fullest, with the brightest light. This time is for shaking off old baggage, unblocking your energy and practicing gratitude.

How to make moon water

It couldn’t be easier. We’ve created a three-step process to help you:

Fill a glass jar or bottle with drinking water. Seal it with a lid.
Imbue the water with the intentions for your chosen moon phase.
Place the jar or bottle outside in full view of the moon to charge overnight.

How to use moon water

You’ve chosen your lunar phase, you’ve charged it under moonlight, now, what can you do with your moon water? The key is to think about what intentions you set while making it.

In a new moon or full moon bath ritual
Add it to your bath water for a spiritual cleansing ritual bath, as an indoors alternative to moon bathing.
For watering plants
Rejuvenate your plants’ energy with a spray or drink of moon water.
Cleaning your home or crystals
Add it to cleaning products to imbue your home, or sacred space, with energy. You can also use it undiluted to clean crystals such as amethyst, moonstone and some varieties of quartz. Check your crystals can be cleaned with water before starting this ritual.
Drinking (but be careful)
Use it in tea or simply sip from a glass to connect with the moon’s energy. Victoria Beckham is a big fan. But make sure you’ve made it from a suitably clean, drinkable source and wildlife won’t have tampered with it.
